
The Jesse Brown VA Medical Center consists of a
188-bed acute care facilitiy and four community
based outpatient clinics. Jesse Brown VAMC
provides care to approximately 62,000 veterans
who reside in the City of Chicago and Cook
County, Illinois and in six counties in
northwestern Indiana. In FY04, the medical center
had approximately 7,600 inpatient admissions and
531,000 outpatient visits. A budget of over $235
million supports approximately 1,800 staff,
including 180 physicians and 590 nurses. Over 500
individuals volunteer at Jesse Brown VAMC sites
of care. The overrididing strategic direction of
Jesse Brown VAMC over the next several years is
implementation of Capital Asset realignment for
Enchanced Services (CARES) initiatives approved
by the Secretary Principi in February 2002. The
major Chicago-related components of the CARES
study are the construction of a new 205 bed tower
at the Medical Center and the enhanced use lease
of the Lakeside community based outpatient clinic
property.
